Charlotte-Area Emergency Workers Head To Coast To Help

Friday, September 5, 2008 – updated: 11:22 pm EDT September 5, 2008

A local emergency responder and a friend hit the road late Friday night to help Hanna's victims along the North Carolina coast.

“I love helping my community and helping my state," said Cleveland County emergency responder Roger Travis.

He and friend Gary Lawruk loaded a pickup with medical supplies and food donated by local businesses and churches and drove to Southport, N.C., where they were set to coordinate with other medical responders from across the state.

Hershey, Travis' search-and-rescue dog, also made the trip.
