Cleveland County Assisted Living Facility Plagued With Problems

Friday, September 5, 2008 – updated: 6:49 pm EDT September 5, 2008

A woman who walked away from a rest home in Cleveland County two days ago is still missing, and social workers are now worried her health may be deteriorating.

Mouy Tang checked out of the Unique Living home in Fallston on Wednesday and has not been seen or heard from since. She is mentally handicapped and a diabetic, and she may not have had insulin since her last dose at the rest home on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News has obtained several reports that raise questions about that facility.

A report by state inspectors found several violations at the rest home in July, including one for having doors that weren't equipped with audible alarms to let staff members know when residents were leaving.

Another report by local mental health officials questioned whether Unique Living is equipped to care for mentally ill residents.

Social workers estimate that about 95 percent of the residents of Unique Living are mentally ill but there is no full time doctor on staff.
