Charleston and HHI score top honors in travel awards

Updated:

Each year, "Travel and Leisure" surveys its readers on their travel experiences for its World’s Best Awards. Travelers weigh in on their favorite cities, islands, hotels, resorts and more.

The Carolinas usually make a few appearances on the lists and this year was no different. We’ve rounded up the accolades here:

Top Cities

There’s no doubt about: People love Charleston, S.C. For the fifth consecutive year, Chucktown claimed the No. 1 spot on the list of top cities in the U.S., and it was the sole American city ranked in the top 10 overall. (Charleston ranked No. 2 on the world’s top cities list.)

According to T+L, “Charleston is that rare destination that, on paper, seems to have it all – and then totally lives up to the hype. History lovers can stroll the historic cobblestoned center, a maze of immaculate 18th- and 19th century homes, while foodies can schedule their whole day around meals …”

Asheville, N.C., ranked No. 9 as a top city in the United States.

Islands

Another South Carolina destination made an appearance on both the world and U.S. lists. Hilton Head nabbed the top spot in the Continental United States and ranked No. 2 in the world!

“Whether for a weekend, week, or month, the island has so much to do for all ages, on and off the beach,” a fan wrote.

Kiawah Island, S.C., ranked No. 9 in the U.S.

Whether you’re traveling for work or pleasure, you want to stay in top notch accommodations. Charleston, S.C., has two spots that are considered among the top city hotels in the Continental United States. Zero George was ranked No. 12 and The Vendue was ranked No. 9. Both Carolinas claimed spots on the top resort hotels in the Continental United States list. Old Edwards Inn & Spa in Highlands, N.C., ranked No. 14 and The Willcox in Aiken, S.C., ranked No. 8. See the full list of resorts here.

Westglow Resort & Spa in Blowing Rock, N.C., took the top spot in the domestic destination spas category. T+L readers noted the breathtaking views and excellent instructors and therapists. Click here to see the full list.
